Is Google Making Us Stupid?
The central contention of this article is to inform the reader of how the internet has a huge affect on our everyday lives. The internet may be very helpful and convenient but in some cases presented in this article proves that convenient isn’t always what’s best for you.
Internet can have a negative influence on people and their well being. As stated in the article “the more they used the web the harder it is to stay focused.” I can relate to that statement because I have also found myself “skimming” through things that I read, especially if it isn’t to my liking. When you’re on the internet you don’t really have the time to read everything so you skim and scan through different types of writings. When you do work in school you notice that you bring those bad habits into your daily work.
The definition of the internet according to the article “internet is a machine designed for the efficient and automated collection.” In other words the web is a big brain that’s full of worldwide knowledge. This article used the word “substitute” to describe the internet. The author used that word as a synonym because that’s really what it is; a substitute. Instead of doing the research or finding out important information or events through the news, we find it more suitable to just surf the net for it. We forget that we all have brains ourselves and that we can find out news and other things through other sources. We have television, books, radio, magazines, and other human beings to inform us on different issues.

The author also used the word distraction as a synonym in this informative article. For an example, if you’re online doing research for a paper that’s due the next day; you may get side tracked by the other things you could be doing online. Also, the article explained how you may go from one website to another by clicking on the link. Distractions like those can have one’s best intentions turned into something completely divergent. That also goes along with internet safety.
The article didn’t just focus on the cons of internet it also stated some advantages about it. It’s also a pastime and a way of communicating for some people. People connect via emails and social networks all the time. People have found long lost relatives due to different networking sites such as facebook and myspace. When watching television and listening to the radio you can’t always know what your friends, family and/or favorite star is doing; but with twitter you can. In addition, with the internet almost everything is online! From online dictionaries and encyclopedias to shopping and playing games the internet has it all.
In conclusion this article informed the reader about how the internet can be used in a useful and handy way, but, it can also be a disadvantage to someone; in terms of safety or someone just being indolent. The net can be positive in such ways as keeping in touch with family and/or friends or doing an assignment; doing what you perfer. On the other hand the web can be dangerous. You can lose you inability to know how to comprehend what exactly you are reading. Using the web to “skim” isn’t good enough when you are reading something that you should or will have to know. The author of this article wasn’t biased at all; he was completely fair in my opinion.
